Getting around
“Before studying here, I never rode a bike to get from a to b. Cycling is so different in the Netherlands. It’s not just an easy and healthy way of getting around, but it’s also a social thing – a lot of students go out by bike in the evening.”

Healthy choices
“The Dutch really love their sandwiches! But something that I found impressive was the fact that they respect your tastes. For example, my university has days for vegetarian cuisine. I also ended up falling for their famous and nutritious herring sandwich!”

Soaking up the sun
“When I first came to Amsterdam, I was told that I would need a lot of vitamin c and d. Autumn and winter are quite long here, so people said that I was definitely going to end up craving vitamins and sunlight. I ended up taking a vitamin pill a day.”

Reliable
“I helped a friend getting a medical checkup when he was having some health problems. The doctors managed to calm him down and assured him that he was suffering from exam stress. They were very understanding and they’re used to working with students.”

No smoking
“You’re not allowed to smoke inside public buildings, including pubs and restaurants, which makes going out less of a health hazard! However, some public spots have special smoke areas, like Amsterdam Centraal Station.”

Role models
“Dutch people are very laidback and I feel that nothing phases them. I am the sort of person that stresses out easily, but I think it’s good for me to be around people that know how to kick back and relax.”
